EL SEGUNDO, Calif. — Los Angeles Chargers quarterback Justin Herbert did not practice Wednesday, two days after undergoing surgery to repair a broken bone in his non-throwing hand.
Coach Jim Harbaugh said the Chargers (8-4) are preparing as though Herbert will start against the Philadelphia Eagles on Monday, though he repeatedly stressed a formal determination on Herbert’s status would be made later in the week.
“Not gonna practice, but he hasn’t missed a beat,” Harbaugh said. “Already back today in meetings and out on the field for walkthrough.”
Herbert said he had a plate and screws placed in his left hand Monday afternoon. He kept his hand out of sight in the pocket of his sweatshirt during a news conference Wednesday afternoon.
Herbert, who was injured in the first quarter of a 31-14 win over the Las Vegas Raiders on Sunday, is treating this week as if he will play. He has only missed four games because of injury in six seasons with the Chargers, having been sidelined for the last four games in 2023 because of a broken finger on his right hand.
Dallas still hot?
The Cowboys (6-5-1) have won three in a row, including impressive back-to-back wins over the Eagles and Chiefs, to climb back into the playoff race. Detroit is struggling (7-5).
Dak Prescott and the offense are rolling. The defense has improved since defensive tackle Quinnen Williams arrived at the trade deadline.
The Lions (minus 3) have lost three of four. Their dynamic offense has been inconsistent and they could be missing All-Pro WR Amon-Ra St. Brown. AP likes Lions, 27-26.
Bosa hurting
ORCHARD PARK, N.Y. — Bills coach Sean McDermott listed edge rusher Joey Bosa as being week to week because of a hamstring issue that will further impact Buffalo’s already injury-depleted defense.
McDermott did not provide a definitive timeline of how many weeks Bosa will miss except to say “we’re hoping it’s on the shorter end of it.” The 10th-year player was hurt in the second half of Buffalo’s 26-7 win at Pittsburgh on Sunday.
It was a game in which Bosa helped turned the tide with a strip-sack of Aaron Rodgers, with Christian Benford returning the fumble 17 yards for a touchdown on the opening snap of the third quarter. Buffalo hosts Cincinnati on Sunday.
Turkey games enjoyed
The Dallas Cowboys’ 31-28 win over the Kansas City Chiefs on Thanksgiving Day was the most-watched regular-season game in NFL history.
CBS reports the game averaged 57.23 million viewers. The early game between Green Bay and Detroit also drew big numbers, averaging 47.7 million viewers. This makes it the second-most watched regular-season game since Fox began carrying the NFL in 1994.
Crazed fans
PHILADELPHIA — Philadelphia Eagles offensive coordinator Kevin Patullo says a “line was crossed” when his New Jersey home was vandalized.
The incident happened over the weekend after the Eagles lost to the Chicago Bears on Black Friday. Patullo’s home was egged, and he says it went beyond football and into his personal life.
On Wednesday, he emphasized the importance of separating work from family. Patullo has faced criticism this season, his first as offensive coordinator. Despite the Eagles leading the NFC East with an 8-4 record, Patullo’s performance has been under scrutiny.
Can he play?
ASHBURN, Va. — Washington quarterback Jayden Daniels still has not been cleared for contact and his status for Sunday’s game at the Minnesota Vikings is up in the air.
Commanders coach Dan Quinn said he won’t know whether Daniels can play this week until Friday. Daniels has missed Washington’s past three games with a dislocated left elbow — and has been absent for a total of six of the club’s 12 games this season.
