BEREA — The Cleveland Browns are in the midst of another losing season, but three of the Browns players are receiving attention.
Safety Grant Delpit was awarded the Walter Payton Man of the Year, while defensive end Myles Garrett was awarded the AFC Defensive Player of the Month. Not to be outdone, rookie linebacker Carson Schwesinger was named the NFL’s Defensive Rookie of the Month.
The Walter Payton Man of the Year was named after the former Bears Hall of Fame running back for service on and off the field.
Defensive coordinator Jim Schwartz was very pleased with three of his players on the defensie side of the ball earning awards.
“Grant, with the Walter Payton Man of the Year, which is an extreme honor also,” Schwartz said before practice on Thursday. “So congratulations. Carson, for months, I think he’s still got a lot more in front of him.

“Myles, you can only get ignored so many times as player of the week,” he said. “He has quite a bit more. I think I can speak for all those guys maybe other than Grant because Grant’s (was) not on the field, but those other guys would swap those for (more wins).”
Delpit spoke to the media before practice on Thursday.
“I appreciate everybody who’s helped me get this award and all the events that I put on,” Delpit said. “It’s not just me, it’s everybody behind the scenes, coming under, the same roof and it’s cool.
“Everybody comes to the same table under under a common goal just whether that be for holidays, giveaways, back to school, anything, and really just to give back to the community in general is really important to me. Having the platform that we have, I think that’s the main point of it all is like what’s the point of the platform without actually using it for the greater good.”
Delpit, 27, was originally drafted by the Browns in the second round of the 2020 draft out of LSU. Delpit has become one of the leaders on the defense in his sixth season. Delpit started the GD Express Foundation and he’s very active in the Browns Give Back program.
Garrett has a franchise-record number of 19 sacks with five games to play, just 3.5 sacks shy of the NFL sack record. Garrett made both NFL and Browns’ history during the month of November and was recognized by the league for his accomplishments, as he was named the AFC Defensive Player of the Month for November.
Garrett led all NFL players with nine sacks for the month and tied for the league lead with 13 tackles for loss despite the Browns only playing four games. He was the only NFL player to record at least one sack in each game in November and the only NFL player to record multiple tackles for loss in every game.
