The Houston Texans have given themselves new life this regular season after a dismal 0-3 start. Now, squarely in the thick of the AFC South race, DeMeco Ryans’ team is in red-hot form, thanks to the best defense in the NFL. And this stacked unit might receive some more depth to its secondary based on the recent comments from a decorated free agent safety.

Justin Simmons Spoke On Potentially Playing For The Houston Texans
The Houston Texans are now 7-5, riding a four-game winning streak, which includes victories over the Jacksonville Jaguars, Buffalo Bills, and Indianapolis Colts. The two-time defending AFC South champs are just a game back in the divisional race, heading into a pivotal road clash against the Kansas City Chiefs.
The Texans’ strength has been their defense, which has allowed the fewest points per game in the NFL. This is a well-balanced unit, with Pro Bowlers in both the front seven and the secondary. Nonetheless, rookie safety Jaylen Reed suffered a broken metal plate in his forearm during the Week 13 clash against the Colts that will require surgery.
The 22-year-old’s absence places extra stress on a secondary that is already thin at that position, raising questions about whether the Texans will look toward free agency over the next few weeks. One name that has already been circulating is four-time All-Pro Justin Simmons.
The 32-year-old is coming off a trying 2024 campaign with the Atlanta Falcons, but his experience and versatility are exactly what Ryans is looking for at the position. In a recent interview on the “Up & Adams Show” with Kay Adams, Simmons, who hasn’t played this season, detailed why the Texans would be his preferred destination in an NFL return.
“Yeah, that would be awesome. It would be game-changing to play for DeMeco. I’ve heard nothing but great things. I talked to Kareem Jackson all the time. Obviously, his last legit year of playing, he was on Buffalo’s practice squad, but before that he was with Houston, and he was just like, ‘Man you would love it there.’
The way that DeMeco has things going, the defense is flying around. It’s simple, you can play fast, that would be a dream to be able to play with Houston. Right now, there’s not much talk, but that could change now that they’re back in the mix and hoping to make a run.”

Overall, it remains to be seen whether the Texans will add the veteran safety to their secondary. Simmons, however, looks ready to seize this opportunity should it be given to him by a team that could evolve into an AFC contender.
