Jon Sumrall, arguably, improved upon it.

Next man up is aware of the situation he’s about to step in and that is both exciting and a cause for contemplation.

From the jump, it has appeared this search was focused. Yes, there has been considerable inbound interest but the focus has been where the focus has been. LSU defensive coordinator Blake Baker, Tulane passing game coordinator Will Hall and Oregon co-defensive coordinator (& former Tulane defensive coordinator) Chris Hampton all were on the list early and remain there today.

Baker played at Tulane, has coached in the state extensively and has proven himself to be an elite players coach and defensive coordinator at Louisiana Tech, Miami, Missouri and now LSU.

Hampton was beloved Uptown for his leadership of the defense during Willie Fritz’ years. Inside the building, there wasn’t a coach better liked than Hamp.

Will Hall won all the accolades for his prodigious seasons at West Alabama and West Georgia before moving up to become offensive coordinator for several FBS programs. Now in his second stint with Tulane, he is deeply engrained with this current team and would provide great continuity if that is the route Tulane chooses.

With Tulane slated to play Friday evening at home, just about everyone has had this one circled for a decision this evening or tomorrow with an announcement to come after this team finishes with an American Conference Championship.

So, this is where this search stands….
