Two staples of the Pittsburgh Steelers for the better part of two decades: Styx’s “Renegade” blaring through the Acrisure Stadium PA system when the defense needs to make a play in the fourth quarter, and head coach Mike Tomlin roaming the sidelines.
This past Sunday, after the Steelers failed to convert a 4th-and-2 early in the fourth quarter while trying to claw back from a deficit against the Buffalo Bills, the Acrisure disc jockey fired up the 1979 chestnut.
For what appeared to be the first time in recorded history, the crowd booed.
If the faithful who braved the late-November cold hadn’t made their feelings clear enough with that display, just minutes later, with the Bills now in possession of the ball, a “fire Tomlin” chant broke out.
A glitch in the matrix? Or a sign of the times?
“ I mean, we can snicker at the booing of ‘Renegade,’ especially those of us who grew up despising Styx anyway,” quipped Jim Wexell of 247sports.com.
“But, it has an effect. I can’t quite define that effect,  but it affects the brand,” he added. “ I don’t know that those fans will come back to Mike Tomlin’s side if he wins out and wins the division.”
Yes, despite the noise — of both the literal and figurative variety — the Steelers are tied for first place in the AFC North with their Sunday (1 p.m., CBS) opponent, the Baltimore Ravens, at 6-6.
The teams go into Sunday’s game with inverse records over their past eight games: the Steelers have won three and lost five; the Ravens, five and three, respectively.
And, despite the Steelers’ defense giving up an Acrisure-record 249 yards rushing in last Sunday’s loss to Buffalo, there is still a nonzero chance it could contain All-Pro RB Derrick Henry, to whom the Steelers surrendered 413 yards in the teams’ three games last season, Wexell said.
” They have stopped [Indianapolis Colts RB] Jonathan Taylor. They did a good job against the Bears, the No. 2 rushing offense,” he said. “I’ve got to believe pride’s going to factor into this. The Ravens are, too, coming off their debacle of Thursday night [a loss to the Cincinnati Bengals], so it could be a pretty intense game.”
Other tidbits:The Steelers and Ravens have played 63 meaningful times since 1996, the Ravens’ first year in existence. 58 of those games have come in the regular season. The Steelers lead the series record, 33-25. Five of those games have taken place in the postseason. Despite the Ravens having won the last two of these games, the Steelers still have a winning playoff record versus Baltimore, 3-2.Since Tomlin became head coach of the Steelers in 2007, the team owns a 22-18 record under him against Baltimore.Sunday’s game will feature the NFL’s two longest-tenured head coaches with their current teams: Tomlin (19 seasons with Pittsburgh) and John Harbaugh (18 seasons with Baltimore).Members of the Steelers’ 53-man roster who have also been members of the Ravens: S Chuck Clark and LBs Malik Harrison and Patrick Queen. No members of the Ravens’ 53-man roster have also been members of the Steelers.
