A lot has gone right for the Los Angeles Rams this season. They’ve been among the least affected by injuries, have among the fewest giveaways in the league (with only 11) and converted touchdowns in the red zone 66% of the time — the fifth-best mark in the NFL.

This is all a big part of the Rams’ 9-3 record, apart from their obvious on-field production from the offense and defense, which rank sixth and second in scoring, respectively.

There is another element the Rams have benefited greatly from: Penalties. L.A. has a plus-285 penalty yard advantage on accepted penalties so far this season, per @sfdata9ers on X. That mark is No. 1 in the league by 81 yards.

Broken down a bit further: The Rams have lost 426 yards due to penalties called against them, according to NFLpenalties.com, on just 52 total flags — both of which are the lowest mark in the NFL. Meanwhile, L.A. gained 728 yards on penalties. That 302-yard difference is still No. 1 in the NFL, but this site didn’t differentiate between accepted penalties and total penalties.

The Rams are hitting the perfect sweet spot of not being penalized and seeing a lot of flags thrown against their opponent. The average penalties committed per team this year is 81. So, the Rams have been flagged 29 fewer times than the league average, but their opponents have been flagged 11 more times.

Half of this is luck, but the other half is coaching. It takes a certain level of discipline to coach players who don’t commit penalties as well as draw penalties from their opponents. Receiver Davante Adams, for instance, is tied for seventh in defensive pass interference penalties drawn with four (among receivers with at least 40 targets).

Oddly enough, though, the Rams rank fifth in yards given up by hard count penalties committed — 43 — meaning they’ve been tricked into committing penalties like defensive offside, neutral zone infractions and encroachment.

All in all, though, the Rams are a well-disciplined team. And their penalty yardage advantage has served them well in 2025.
