NBA superstar Kevin Durant didn’t mince words when discussing the possibility of Patrick Mahomes missing the NFL playoffs this season. The Kansas City Chiefs have had a tumultuous 2025 campaign after losing Super Bowl LIX to the Philadelphia Eagles, posting a 6-6 record entering Week 14.
Coming off a 31-28 loss to the Dallas Cowboys on Thanksgiving, the Chiefs will take on the Houston Texans, the best defense in the league, to try to bounce back. The Chiefs rank third in the AFC West, and the possibility of seeing them miss the postseason gets bigger by the week.
While some have suggested that missing the playoffs would hurt Mahomes’ legacy, Durant came out to defend the three-time Super Bowl champion. During a Friday appearance on Kay Adams’ “Up & Adams” show, the two-time NBA champion rejected that idea.
“What kind of question is that? That makes no sense at all,” Durant said. “If anybody is questioning Pat Mahomes’ legacy from one off year…He can miss the playoffs for the rest of his career. I don’t give a damn. This man is Patrick Mahomes.
“Come on. Are we going to question Pat Mahomes, Chris Jones, Travis Kelce? [Mahomes] is still an all-time great, potentially the greatest of all time.”
After posting a 15-2 record in 2024, the Chiefs found stronger competition in 2025. So far, they have dropped games against the Jacksonville Jaguars, Buffalo Bills and the Denver Broncos before their most recent game against the Cowboys.
The Texans aren’t as sharp as before on offense, but their defense has carried several games. This will be one of the toughest matchups for Kansas City for the rest of the season. They will host the Chargers in Week 15, visit the Tennessee Titans in Week 17 before returning home to face the Denver Broncos. They will close out the regular season against the Las Vegas Raiders at Allegiant Stadium.
Kansas City must win out to advance to the playoffs or a different team will sit on their AFC throne in January.
