Amid a two-game slide, Philadelphia Eagles running back Saquon Barkley suggested Saturday that the team’s sideline demeanor hasn’t been where it needs to be recently.

Speaking to reporters Saturday ahead of the Eagles’ upcoming meeting with the Los Angeles Chargers on Monday Night Football, Barkley commented on the team’s sideline energy, saying, “During games? Honestly, I think it’s been awful. I think if you ask anybody, if they’re being honest, we’d all agree on that. Most importantly, I think the energy in practice, in walkthrough, in meetings, has been great. Now we got to carry that to game day. So all the stuff has been great, and now we need to make sure on game day, the energy is high and we execute and we make plays. The rest will take care of itself.”

The Eagles began the season 8-2 and seemed to be trending toward another NFC East title, and potentially the No. 1 seed in the NFC playoff standings, but things have gone south recently.

It started with blowing a 21-0 lead and failing to score any points in the second half of a 24-21 loss to the Dallas Cowboys two weeks ago. Then, Philly looked listless in a 24-15 loss to the Chicago Bears on Black Friday, dropping the Eagles’ record to 8-4.

The Eagles still own a 2.5-game lead over the Cowboys in the NFC East and are just one game out of the NFC’s top seed, but it is fair to say the vibes out of Philly have been negative lately.

Philadelphia has scored just 15 points in its past six quarters, the both sides of the ball struggled mightily against the Bears.

The Eagles managed just 317 yards of total offense in the game, and they allowed the Bears to rush for 281 yards on the strength of the running back tandem of D’Andre Swift and Kyle Monangai.

Chicago possessed the ball for nearly 40 minutes as a result, which was almost double Philadelphia’s time of possession.

The Eagles won the Super Bowl last season because they won in the trenches on both offense and defense, but they haven’t been doing that well enough lately.

Because of that, it comes as little surprise that the players have been frustrated, but Barkley’s comments suggest they will need to be in a better headspace to have a more favorable result against the Chargers.
