The Pittsburgh Steelers have elevated two practice squad players ahead of their matchup against the Baltimore Ravens, per a press release issued by the team. WR Marquez Valdes-Scantling and OT Dylan Cook will get a helmet tomorrow, using one of their three practice squad elevations for the season.
Valdes-Scantling played with Aaron Rodgers in Green Bay for four seasons at the beginning of his career. It’s been four seasons since they played together, but there should still be some chemistry. They’ve also had the last few weeks to practice together since Valdes-Scantling signed to the practice squad in early November.
Appearing in just five games this season for the San Francisco 49ers, Valdes-Scantling caught four of his eight targets for 40 yards. His most productive seasons came over his first five years in the league, four with Rodgers and one with Patrick Mahomes in Kansas City.
With Valdes-Scantling elevated, we will see whether new Steelers WR Adam Thielen, who was claimed from the Minnesota Vikings’ waivers earlier this week, gets a helmet on Sunday. It might be too quick of a turnaround to have him active right away, but the Steelers could use whatever spark they can find at this point.
If both play, it will be interesting to track their snaps against Calvin Austin III and Roman Wilson. The results may be telling.
Thielen traveled with the team. This does not guarantee that he plays. Asante Samuel Jr. traveled with the team to Chicago and did not suit up against the Bears.
As a deep threat, Valdes-Scantling joins one of the worst deep-ball passing offenses in the league. Maybe he can give them the spark they are looking for.
Cook first signed with the Steelers in 2023 during the offseason and has been on and off the roster and practice squad ever since. With Broderick Jones on IR and backup OT Calvin Anderson ruled out for the week with a knee injury, tackle depth was running thin behind Troy Fautanu and Andrus Peat. Game day rosters can be 48 players as long as eight of them are offensive linemen, so Cook will help them take advantage of that rule.
Along with the starting five OL, Spencer Anderson, Ryan McCollum, and Dylan Cook will fill out the active roster on game day.
