Duke and No. 17 Virginia are each on the precipice of a historic achievement for their football programs as they square off Saturday night in the ACC Championship Game from Bank of American Stadium in Charlotte. Neither team has won the league title game before, and this will be just the second championship game appearance for both.

Against that backdrop, the game is teeming with significance even beyond the obvious College Football Playoff ramifications. If the Cavaliers win, they’ll be in the 12-team CFP field that will be announced Sunday. If Duke, wins, its CFP fate will be determined by the selection committee, which would be weighing the 8-5 Blue Devils against No. 25 James Madison, which won the Sun Belt Championship Game on Friday night.

The prospect of the ACC champion being left out of the playoff is a potential disaster for the conference. But regardless of who wins, the champion will be celebrating a historic achievement.
