The Notre Dame Fighting Irish are holding their collective breath on Sunday as the College Football Playoff committee meets to determine the final rankings – and which 12 teams will make the playoff.
Marcus Freeman and company received some good news when Texas Tech dispatched BYU in the Big 12 title game and again got good news on Saturday afternoon when Georgia soundly defeated the Alabama Crimson Tide to win the SEC. The committee has been jostling Alabama and Notre Dame since the playoff rankings first emerged in Week 11, but a loss from the Crimson Tide could open the door for the Fighting Irish.
That’s not what college football insider John Talty of CBS Sports believes, though.

On Sunday morning, the man who correctly predicted an undefeated Florida State team would miss the playoff in 2023 is now predicting Notre Dame to miss the playoff.
“I correctly predicted Alabama over FSU in 2023 and SMU over Alabama in 2024. For my final 2025 projections, I’ve got Alabama and Miami in over Notre Dame. My guy @RJ_cfb is the lone other @CBSSportsCFB expert to predict the same,” Talty said on social media.
Most analysts, including ESPN’s Heather Dinich, believe the Fighting Irish will make the playoff – potentially as the No. 9 seed with a matchup against No. 8 Oklahoma looming.
Notre Dame will find out at 12 p.m. ET if it makes the playoff.
