CLEVELAND ― The final tally from Cam Ward’s afternoon against the Cleveland Browns: sacked once, hurried five times, pelted by one snowball.

Ward and the Tennessee Titans outlasted the Browns with a 31-29 victory at Huntington Bank Field on Dec. 7, giving the Titans just their second win of the season. Snow never accumulated on the field, but there were flurries through the first three quarters of the game, coming down steadily in the middle quarters — enough for Browns fans to build up a stockpile of snowballs.

And any time the Titans found their way into the end zone, the Dawg Pound faithful took aim.

“Yeah, they got me on one,” Ward admitted after the win. “I’m glad they did. At least they’ve got some accuracy.”

Ward and the Titans had some fun at the cheering section’s expense, emboldened by the team’s biggest scoring day of the season. The win marked the first two-touchdown day of Ward’s career, and the Titans’ first four-touchdown game since Week 16 of last season. Throw in an interception, fumble return, blocked punt and long return on a two-point conversion stop, and the Titans had plenty to be celebrating.

Unsurprisingly, star defensive tackle Jeffery Simmons found his way into the middle of that action, and was the target of more than a few snowballs himself.

“This is the first time I’ve really looked up to the fans and, I think it was a quarter change and I had just made a play on the other end zone so I was pretty fired up and I come back on the other end and they were giving me the bird,” Simmons recounted. “So I’m like, ‘All right,’ and I gave them the wrist, which is (Cleveland quarterback Shedeur Sanders’) thing that he does. It’s fun. That’s the reason why you play the game. You look forward to those types of environments. Once you make a play, you shut ‘em up.”

After Ward threw a fourth-quarter touchdown to give the Titans a 28-17 lead, Simmons was one of the first players to meet him coming back to the sideline. Simmons greeted him with the “Zombieland” celebration that Ward helped popularize as chunks rained down from the stands.

So maybe the snowball that hit Ward was intended for Simmons?

“Well, shoot, he wasn’t accurate then,” Ward joked. “It was good to be in the end zone. That’s just something that we’ve got to do. We’ve got to keep being in the end zone as we come down to the final stretch.”
