ORCHARD PARK, N.Y. — The Buffalo Bills added a certain degree of difficulty Sunday afternoon at Highmark Stadium.

They scored three touchdowns in only four and half minutes to surge past the Cincinnati Bengals 39-34 and move a step closer toward the playoffs in a jumbled AFC race.

So, what comes next for the Bills? It’s an opportunity to avenge a Week 5 loss to the New England Patriots. That 30-23 setback happened at Highmark Stadium, and sent both teams on very different paths — the Bills rode some highs and lows, and New England went on to win 10 straight games heading into this week’s bye.

Sunday’s game is scheduled to kick off at 1 p.m. in Foxborough, Mass., and it represents the Bills’ best chance to stay in the AFC East race. A road win would cut the Patriots’ division lead to one game with four to go. A loss would leave Buffalo three games back, and that’s not to mention New England earning a tiebreaker with the series sweep.

Leaving out Monday night’s game between the Los Angeles Chargers and Philadelphia Eagles, here are what the matchups would look like in the AFC:

No. 1 Denver Broncos (11-2), byeNo. 7 Houston Texans (8-5) at No. 2 New England Patriots (11-2)No. 6 Los Angeles Chargers (8-4) at No. 3 Jacksonville Jaguars (9-4)No. 5 Buffalo Bills (9-4) at Pittsburgh Steelers (7-6)

That brings us to teams who are on the outside looking in, at least for the moment. They are, in order:

Indianapolis Colts (8-5) Baltimore Ravens (6-7)Kansas City Chiefs (6-7)Miami Dolphins (6-7)Cincinnati Bengals (4-9)New York Jets (3-10), eliminatedCleveland Browns (3-10), eliminatedLas Vegas Raiders (2-11), eliminatedTennessee Titans (2-11), eliminated

Tiebreakers between and among teams are decided by a number of factors, including head-to-head outcomes, records against division opponents, records against AFC opponents, best win percentage in common games, and more.

Here’s the remainder of the Bills’ schedule:
