With 8-5 Duke upsetting then-No. 17 Virginia in the ACC championship on Saturday night, the CFP selection committee ranked Tulane at No. 20 and James Madison at No. 24, giving those two programs an automatic bid over the Blue Devils.

Green Wave head coach Jon Sumrall accepted a new gig with the same title at Florida on Nov. 30.

However, Sumrall coached Tulane to a 34-21 win over North Texas in the American Championship on Friday night. He intends to coach the program in the CFP before fully taking over his duties with the Gators.

“And to be the head football coach here has been very special for me and my family, and I wanted to coach this out,” Sumrall said on ESPN’s “SportsCenter” last week. “I wanted to be a part of this conference championship game this week, and hopefully something after that, if we can handle our business.”

Amid the Green Wave’s run to the CFP, the program has been conducting a national coaching search to replace Sumrall.

Per ESPN’s Pete Thamel, Tulane is set to hire assistant coach Will Hall as its next head coach.

“Sources: Tulane is set to promote veteran assistant coach Will Hall to be the head coach” Thamel posted on X. “He’s the former head coach at Southern Miss and worked as Tulane’s OC in 2019-20 and returned as the pass game coordinator last year.”

Hall, 45, went 25-11 during his three seasons at West Alabama before taking over at West Georgia. He went 31-9 during his three seasons with the Wolves.

Hall took over at Southern Miss in 2021. The Golden Eagles went 14-30 during his four seasons with the program. Hall was fired in 2024 following a 1-6 start to the season and an 0-3 beginning in Sun Belt play.
