Soon after taking an on-field coaching job for the first time in his career at Colorado, a quote surfaced regarding Williams’ ability as an off-field recruiter following his time at Georgia and Texas A&M.

Nick Williams is the best I’ve ever seen,” one prominent college football General Manager/Chief of Staff told On3’s Steve Wiltfong, then of 247Sports.

Colorado served as the first opportunity for Williams to become a dedicated position coach. In one recruiting cycle, Williams was the primary recruiter for three blue-chip prospects for the Buffaloes: four-star athlete Kam Mikell, four-star defensive lineman Brandon Davis-Swain and four-star wide receiver Adam Hopkins.

Mikell was likely his most impressive win, beating out other finalists like Georgia, Tennessee, South Carolina and Texas A&M. Williams’ ties to South Georgia helped him win out for Mikell.

“He was always real,” Mikell said of Williams after committing to Colorado. “He’s always making calls, checks on me, talks to me. He’s from South Georgia so we can relate. He’s been talking to me and making sure everything is alright.”

After a season in Boulder, Fran Brown hired Williams to be his outside linebackers coach at Syracuse.
