Jalen Hurts and the Philadelphia Eagles’ offense have endured their fair share of struggles recently. But they achieved a new low on one particular play on Monday night.
The Eagles were driving to potentially take the lead early in the second quarter of Monday’s game against the Los Angeles Chargers at SoFi Stadium. That’s when disaster struck.
Hurts threw a brutal interception. Da’Shawn Hand, the Chargers’ 300-pound defensive lineman, dropped into coverage over the middle, and Hurts threw it right to him.
Hand tried to return the pick but was quickly chased down by running back Will Shipley, who punched the ball free. The ball bounced off the SoFi Stadium turf, and Hurts was there to jump up and snag it. But he only held onto the ball for a brief moment.
Hurts, instead of falling on it and getting a fresh set of downs, tried to scoop it up and pick up some yards. Chargers defensive tackle Jamaree Caldwell promptly punched it loose, and it was recovered by linebacker Troy Dye.
According to Elias Sports Bureau, Hurts became the first play since at least 1978 to commit two turnovers on one play.
“This is maybe the most wild play I’ve ever seen,” Eagles legend and ESPN analyst Jason Kelce said on the “Monday Night Football” halftime show.
For neutral observers, the play was probably hilarious. For fantasy football managers, it had to be frustrating; the INT and lost fumble cost them four points on one play.
But for Eagles fans, it was embarrassing. It didn’t help that the Chargers kicked a field goal on the ensuing drive. And it really didn’t help that Hurts threw an INT on the next drive.
Ugly stuff from an ugly offense.
