No NFL analyst bats a thousand. Even the best ones have their fair share of blunders — what can I say? Then again, that’s the nature of the business. Things are always fluid, and what appears to be a certainty at some point can turn out to be a flop. For instance, the Indianapolis Colts had a firm grasp early in the season and seemed to be in position to seize the AFC South in October. However, the Jacksonville Jaguars have displaced them and now own the No. 1 place in the division.
Speaking of bad takes, when the Jags hired Liam Coen as the head coach, he became an internet meme because of his odd Duval chat. While there’s no doubt that it was a silly moment, some talking heads wrongly saw it as an indicator of his ability to win football games. Pat McAfee was among them.
Fast forward to early December, and Jacksonville is 9-4. And following the win over the Colts, McAfee’s comments about Coen resurfaced. Let’s just say that he didn’t take things with grace.
Pat McAfee’s baffling take has him feuding with Jaguars fans
After the Colts game, Twitter user @DuvalGiant77 put together a montage of Pat McAfee mocking Liam Coen for his Duval chant, followed by a look at the Jaguars locker room celebrating with their head coach after the win.
“Obviously, the new head coach of the Jacksonville Jaguars, who are in the county of Duval,” McAfee said while clipping Coen’s chant. “Whenever you see this is tough, and it’s hard to say this guy has no chance of winning. There’s no way anybody is going to take him seriously. It’s hard not to say this guy looks like his going to suck as a head coach.”
It’s fair to say that McAfee’s take aged poorly. He caught wind of the video, and the reasonable reaction would have been to accept that he was wrong. Instead, it looks like it struck a nerve as he unleashed on Jaguars fans. Behold what he had to say:
“You bums acting like we havne’t been massive supporters of Liam and your Jags is wild,” McAfee said.
The issue is that both things aren’t mutually exclusive. Nobody will deny that McAfree has spoken glowingly of the Jaguars at times, but that doesn’t magically erase his original remarks. Again, why not simply accept that he was wrong? Below is the back-and-forth on social media.

To Pat McAfee’s credit, he kind of backtracked his remarks on his show one day after the Jaguars beat Indianapolis.
“They clipped us making fun of the opening press conference. I saw one of your fans here,” McAfee told his co-host. “You don’t think we’ve been supportive of the Jags since that day. That day, it was hard not to make fun of him, to be honest. He got Duval wrong.”
Here’s the thing, though: McAfee wasn’t just making fun of Coen. He was outright saying he was going to be a flop. And even if that had been the case, why not just post on social media what he said on his show instead of going at it with fans on social media?
Ultimately, the Jaguars are winning under Liam Coen and playing meaningful games. That will certainly expose plenty of bad takes that came up after his hiring.
