WASHINGTON (7News) — Washington Commanders‘ Jake Martin spent his Tuesday volunteering at Human Rescue Alliance in Washington, DC.

The team’s defensive end partnered with the Human Rescue Alliance to launch the 55 Rescue Drive, a month-long adoption campaign dedicated to helping big dogs find loving homes.

Martin was at the door greeting patrons who were picking up or dropping off their animals for vaccinations and grabbing other essential items, for which Martin was footing the bill.

“Just to let you know, everything is on me today, so ball out,” Martin told a patron.

“The 55 Drive is my initiative that I did with the HRA in DC, trying to advocate for big dogs,” Martin told 7News. “I’m a big dog lover, I have three big dogs at home, and I think they’re the greatest thing to walk the earth, and I think there’s a lot of misconceptions about big dogs.”

Martin personally covered the costs of all rabies and distemper vaccines administered during the clinic visit.

“It’s hard, man, having three dogs is a lot…and then being a responsible dog owner in terms of staying up to date with vaccinations, and taking care of your dog when they’re sick or in need, those pet bills add up,” Martin said.

“So it’s hard on anyone. So that’s the least I could do this holiday season, is to make sure that people’s dogs and stuff are in good health,” Martin added.

Despite the Commanders’ challenging season, with a 3-10 record so far, they still have four games ahead of them.

Martin also added that football is what he does, but animals are his passion.

“For me, animals will always be my passion,” he said. “It was my first passion, and football is just a means for me to bring that passion to reality.”

The 55 Rescue Drive ends on Dec. 11.
