During his weekly Tuesday press conference, Pittsburgh Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin offered an injury update ahead of the team’s Week 15 game against the Miami Dolphins. Per Tomlin, one player is already ruled out for the team’s upcoming game.

“Calvin Anderson at tackle can be characterized as out again this week with his knee,” Tomlin said via the team’s YouTube channel. “Certainly we have several guys in the concussion protocol. We’ll let that process run its course and the medical experts will be center stage in determining availability of those guys. Those guys are [Andrus] Peat, Malik Harrison, Darnell Washington.

“We have some other guys who got banged up during the course of play. Keeanu Benton had an ankle, he was able to go back and finish. I’m sure that will limit him some at the early portions of this week. James Pierre suffered a calf injury. He was able to finish but it could certainly impact him at the early portions of this week. Ben Skowronek, Yahya Black, and others. Kyle Dugger certainly has a chance to come back from his hand injury.”

Though not noted in his opening statement, Tomlin said rookie DL Derrick Harmon will return to practice this week after missing the last two games with a knee injury.

“Derrick Harmon will be limited at the early portions of the week,” Tomlin said when asked about the first-round pick. “We’ll let the amount of participation and how quickly it picks up and the quality of that participation as we go through the week to determine whether or not he’s available. Certainly, excited about the additional day as it pertains to him.”

Tomlin said WR DK Metcalf will be limited in the early part of the week after having to stay in a Baltimore hospital night Sunday night due to post-game stomach pains. Tomlin expects him to play against the Dolphins.

Pittsburgh suffered three concussions in Sunday’s win over the Baltimore Ravens. Washington, Peat, and Harrison will work through concussion protocol in an attempt to get cleared. Having the extra day for a Monday night game will help. This year, there have been players who didn’t miss a game due to a concussion (WR Ke’Shawn Williams, CB James Pierre) and those who have sat out one week (former Steelers CB Darius Slay). It’s impossible to predict who will or won’t move through the protocol quickly enough.

If Washington sits, Pat Freiermuth and Jonnu Smith will be the team’s top two tight ends. Dylan Cook could be in line to start at left tackle for Peat while Cole Holcomb will see extra snaps for Malik Harrison if he’s unable to play.

Harmon has missed the last two games with a knee injury and in total, has sat out four games as a rookie due to various knee problems. Pittsburgh’s run defense has suffered greatly without him. In those four games, the Steelers are allowing 191.3 rushing yards per game including back-to-back 200-yard performances against the Buffalo Bills and Ravens. Pittsburgh will take on a Miami team that is top 10 in rushing yards with a star back in De’Von Achane who has rushed for at least 90 yards and one touchdown in each of his last four games.

Yahya Black has been starting in Harmon’s absence, double-dipping as a starting end and backup nose tackle.

Dugger injured his hand during practice last week. Jabrill Peppers and Chuck Clark combined to replace him. Peppers played in base packages to stop the run while Clark played in nickel and passing situations.

Calvin Anderson suffered a knee injury during practice last week. He has been serving as the swing tackle all season. It’s not clear who will fill that role should Peat sit out and Cook start at tackle.

Pierre seems likely to play but if not, Asante Samuel Jr. will be next man up. Benton was injured two plays into the Ravens game but finished it out. He and Black are likely to suit up, which will be all the more critical if Harmon continues to miss. Skowronek has battled shoulder and finger injuries but is likely to play Monday night.

Patrick Queen battled a glute injury to get cleared for Sunday’s game and gutted out a leg injury to finish out the contest. He will likely see limited reps early in the week but is poised to play against Miami.

The Steelers and Dolphins kick off Monday night at 8:15 PM/EST.
