Omaha (Neb.) Westside three-star safety Bryson Williams was committed to Iowa State since June and signed with the Cyclones last week. His plans are now changing.
With Matt Campbell now the head coach at Penn State, much of Iowa State’s 2026 recruiting class is now reevaluating its options. Williams announced on Tuesday evening that he’s been released from signing with the Midwest Big 12 program.
“I will always appreciate the opportunity I was given to be an Iowa State Cyclone. After the recent coaching changes my family and I have decided it’s best to explore other opportunities. With that being said I have been released from my signing and my recruitment is back open,” Williams wrote on X announcing his decision.
Williams is the No. 954 overall prospect and No. 92 safety in the 2026 cycle, according to the Rivals Industry Ranking, a weighted average that utilizes all major recruiting media companies. He’s also the No. 8 recruit in Nebraska.
When news broke that Campbell was leaving Ames for Happy Valley, Williams told Rivals that it was unlikely that he would wind up with ISU.
“I don’t have much to say,” he said. “I probably won’t be staying in Ames. Don’t know a lot of details so far. I’ll let you know when I’ve got a plan.”
“It affects our class for sure,” he added “I’m not too worried, I just got to figure out what my position coach doing. If he going with (Campbell) I’m going. If not, I’ll look elsewhere.”
Williams is the first member of Iowa State’s 2026 class to be released from signing with the program. Penn State will of course be a program to watch for the defensive back. The Nittany Lions signed just two prospects last week.
Earlier on Tuesday, Grinnell (Iowa) four-star interior offensive lineman Will Slagle, a 2027 prospect, decommitted from the Cyclones. He’s the No. 20 IOL in the junior class and will be giving Campbell and PSU a hard look moving forward.
“First off, his culture he brings is unmatched,” Slagle told Rivals’ Greg Smith. “You see it in himself, the players, and the coaches he surrounds himself with. Second off, he is a simple guy that many people can relate to. He has no ego so that’s why fans, families, and recruits are so quick to love him.”
