Seattle Seahawks rookie safety Nick Emmanwori had the biggest game of his young career on Sunday.

Seahawks’ Emmanwori proving ‘there’s nothing he can’t do’

The ultra-versatile South Carolina product put his rare combination of size, speed and athleticism on full display, filling up the stat sheet with a spectacular blocked field goal, an interception, a sack and two tackles for loss in Seattle’s 37-9 rout of the Atlanta Falcons.

In doing so, the 6-foot-3, 220-pound Emmanwori became the first player in franchise history and the first NFL player since 2010 to record a blocked field goal, an interception and a sack in the same game.

Emmanwori’s standout performance also thrust him directly into the NFL Defensive Rookie of the Year conversation.

That award appears to be a two-man race between Emmanwori and Cleveland Browns linebacker Carson Schwesinger, a second-round draft pick out of UCLA. Schwesinger was drafted at No. 33 overall, just two spots ahead of Emmanwori.

Below is a look at how their stat lines compare this season. Keep in mind that Emmanwori has played nearly four full fewer games than Schwesinger, due to an ankle injury that he suffered in the opening minutes of Week 1.

• Emmanwori: 1.5 sacks, 6 tackles for loss, 1 interception, 9 pass breakups, 53 total tackles, 1 blocked field goal (10 games)

• Schwesinger: 1.5 sacks, 10 tackles for loss, 2 interceptions, 3 pass breakups, 119 total tackles (13 games)

One key difference between the two players is that Schwesinger has played a traditional inside linebacker role, while Emmanwori has been deployed at a variety of different spots on the field as a safety-corner-linebacker hyprid.

“It’s amazing what he’s done,” Seahawks Radio Network analyst and former NFL linebacker Dave Wyman said of Emmanwori on Seattle Sports’ Wyman and Bob. “… He’s definitely in the mix for Defensive Rookie of the Year.”
