The writing had seemingly been on the wall for quite some time, but on Monday the Cincinnati Bengals officially made the call to part ways with Jermaine Burton.

Burton, who was a third round selection by the Bengals in 2024, was suspended just hours before the team’s matchup with the Buffalo Bills on Sunday. He would ultimately not make the trip for the 39-34 loss at Buffalo.

The following Monday, head coach Zac Taylor was asked about the suspension which is where he announced that Burton would no longer be a part of the franchise.

“I think everybody worked really hard at it and wish him the best,” Taylor said according to ESPN. “Hopefully he gets a change of scenery and it can do good things for him.”

Burton has had a checkered history in Cincinnati which has included missed walkthroughs, healthy scratches and more games where he was left behind.

Burton had also been named in a police report for different alleged domestic violence incidents back in December of 2024, but no charges were filed.

Prior to the season, Burton had received encouragement from general manager Duke Tobin, as well as quarterback Joe Burrow.  Burrow was amongst the group stating that Burton had a refreshed mindset in his approach to the game and his second year.

“(He) has taken it very seriously,” Burrow said back in May. “Has matured, it seems like. That’s exciting to see. Based on the conversations that we have had, he’s in a good spot mentally and physically. And he’s been working hard, which is exciting to see.”

Burton now ends his tenure with 14 total appearances with the Bengals, all of which came during his rookie season.
