Former Washington Commanders coach Ron Rivera thought he found the tight end of the future in the fifth round of the 2022 NFL draft. When the Commanders selected 6-foot-6. 240-pound Cole Turner with the No. 149 overall pick, Rivera believed he’d landed a steal.
In his first training camp, Turner opened eyes, making plays in practice, exciting the team. A former college wide receiver, Turner appeared perfect for the modern NFL. Then, a nagging injury in training camp essentially stalled Turner’s progress, and he never recaptured that momentum.

After sticking around for three seasons, Washington finally waived Turner in August during its final cuts. After going all season without a team, Turner finally has a new home. On Tuesday, the Tennessee Titans signed Turner to their practice squad.
While the Titans have rookie Gunnar Helm and Chig Okonkwo on the roster, Okonkwo is a free agent at season’s end. Tennessee also has depth issues at wide receivers, so perhaps Turner could move back to his old college position, serving in a “big slot” role.
It’s good to see the former Washington draft pick receive a second chance.
