We may have just received a major hint about the New York Jets quarterback situation ahead of the Week 15 Jacksonville Jaguars game.

On Tuesday, December 9, the Jets didn’t work out any quarterbacks.

ESPN’s Rich Cimini said, “perhaps a sign they’re not overly concerned about the [Tyrod] Taylor and [Justin] Fields injuries. The only workout today was DE Kingsley Jonathan, who was signed to the practice squad.”

Head coach Aaron Glenn was asked on Monday if the team would need to add any quarterbacks to the roster, considering their injury situation.

“Well, we will see how everything progresses during the week. Like I said, we gotta see how the injuries are with all of our quarterbacks right now,” Glenn said.

Head Coach Aaron Glenn Didn’t Provide Updates on QBs

On Monday, December 8, head coach Aaron Glenn didn’t provide an update on the health status of Fields or Taylor.

“No real updates when it comes to injuries. I will have a clear update on that sometime later this evening, and going into Wednesday, I will be able to truly fill you guys in on everything when it comes to injuries,” Coach Glenn said.

Fields was ruled out for the Week 14 Miami Dolphins game due to knee soreness. Coach Glenn left his status in doubt for the following week with his commentary.

In the second drive of the Dolphins game, Taylor hurt his groin and was ruled out for the rest of the contest. That put his status for this week very much in question.

“Well, I talked about how he [Fields] felt some soreness on Wednesday, he was limited on Thursday, and on Friday, he was out of practice. I told you guys that he was going to be inactive for the week, and we will see how he progresses going into this week. Nothing has changed with that,” Coach Glenn said.

Is Health Going to Be the Deciding Factor in the QB Decision?

Coach Glenn was asked if health status would be the sole factor that determines who will start at quarterback.

“Yeah, we gotta see what guys are healthy enough to give us a chance to win,” he responded.

If that were true, then it would be unlikely that Brady Cook would start. He was the practice squad quarterback all season and was just recently signed to the 53-man roster.

The reason you would want to play Cook isn’t health-related; it would be evaluation-related. Over the weekend, the Jets were mathematically eliminated from playoff contention.

If the team were still alive, you could make an argument that having a veteran QB in the lineup would make some sense. However, with that off the table, it should be a simple choice.

“I’m going to play the guy that I think gives us the best chance to win,” Coach Glenn said.

Cook may not give the Jets the best chance to win, but it’s worth finding out what he brings to the table. It would be extremely valuable if Cook proved capable of being a backup quarterback in the NFL.
