The Washington Commanders have signed veteran running back Chase Edmonds from their practice squad, the team announced Wednesday morning.
Edmonds signed to Washington’s practice squad on Sept. 15, just a day after running back Austin Ekeler tore his Achilles after exiting the Commanders‘ 27-18 Week 2 loss to the Green Bay Packers.

With Ekeler sidelined for the entire season, Edmonds was brought in to give the running back room some depth behind rookie running back Jacory Croskey-Merritt, Jermey McNichols, and Chris Rodriguez Jr.
Edmonds, 29, was a fourth-round pick by the Arizona Cardinals in the 2018 NFL draft and spent his first four seasons with the team. His best year came in 2021, when he rushed for 592 yards and added 311 receiving yards.
Following that strong season, Edmonds signed with the Miami Dolphins in free agency, but he struggled to recapture his Arizona form.
He appeared in just eight games for Miami before he was included in the trade to the Denver Broncos for pass rusher Bradley Chubb. The Broncos released him that offseason, and Edmonds later joined the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, rushing for 176 yards in 2023. He re-signed with Tampa Bay in 2024 but suffered a knee injury in training camp and has been sidelined since.

He has yet to record an offensive stat this season, despite seeing the field in Washington’s 16-13 overtime loss to the Miami Dolphins in Madrid, Spain.
