The New York Giants (2-11) host their longtime rivals, the Washington Commanders (3-10), at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey, this Sunday afternoon.
Here are six things to know before the Week 15 kickoff.
The series
This is the 188th meeting between the Giants and Washington, dating back to 1932. The Giants lead the series, 107-72-5 and are 57-31-3 at home.
The Commanders have won the last three meetings and are seeking to sweep the Giants in back-to-back seasons for the first time since the 1982 and 1983 seasons. Washington was the Super Bowl champion in 1982 and runner-up in 1983.
The teams met in Week 1 at Northwest Stadium this season, a 21-6 Washington victory.
The latest
The Giants are coming off their bye week. They have lost seven straight games and eight of their last nine.
The Commanders were shut out in Minnesota last week by the Vikings, 31-0. They have lost eight straight and nine of their last ten.
What’s at stake for the Giants
Believe it or not, quite a bit. The palace intrigue has been getting more intense over the past few weeks. The Giants are not sold on interim head coach Mike Kafka and will be conducting a wide search for a new head coach this offseason. That search, so far, will be led by general manager Joe Schoen, but his status has also been called into question after the Giants have gone 11-36 since the beginning of the 2023 season.
Win or lose, changes are coming. Anyone who wants to stay will be looking to ball out. Anyone looking for a bus ticket will get one.
What’s at stake for Washington
The Commanders had a surprising 2024 season, which ended in the NFC Championship Game at the hands of the eventual Super Bowl Champion Philadelphia Eagles. This season could not have gone worse after getting off to a 3-2 start.
Injuries to star quarterback Jayden Daniels, wide receiver Terry McLaurin, and others have put a crimp in Dan Quinn’s team’s progress. They’d like to finish the season on an uptick.
Last place and draft status
A Giants victory in this game will make each team 3-11 on the year and tie them for last place in the NFC East with three weeks remaining.
The Giants currently hold the top pick in the 2026 NFL draft, but face a favorable schedule the rest of the way. Their remaining opponents have a winning percentage of just .317. They could end up with four or five wins this year, but would still draft in the Top 10.
Washington holds the sixth overall pick at the moment and will have a say on who wins the division this year after all, as their final three games are against Philadelphia, Dallas, and Philly again. Then again, they could get very close to the top of the draft order next April.
Daniels versus Dart?
Giants first-round draft pick Jaxson Dart will be under center on Sunday. He did not play in the first meeting, so this will be his debut against the Commanders.
The question remaining is whether the Commanders will send out their young stud quarterback, Jayden Daniels, last year’s NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year, in this game.
Daniels has been dealing with an elbow issue and re-aggravated the injury in last week’s loss in Minnesota. They may choose to keep Daniels on the bench in this otherwise meaningless game.
Either way, these two are destined to be rivals for many years to come.
