Iowa State is reported to have hired the Detroit Lions’ tight end coach, Tyler Roehl, as the new offensive coordinator for Cyclone football.
Welcoming a change in staffing, with former head coach Matt Campbell signing an eight-year contract with Penn State, new Iowa State head coach Jimmy Rogers welcomes a new era of Cyclone football with the addition of a new coaching staff.
With Campbell reportedly taking defensive coordinator Jon Heacock to Penn State with him and speculation of offensive coordinator Ryan Clanton joining the Nittany Lions as well, Rogers was quick to poach new hires to fill in coaching roles at Iowa State.
The news was first brought to the public from a report by Dave Birkett of the Detroit Free Press, which stated Roehl is expected to take the new offensive coordinator job at Iowa State. The Lions have yet to officially announce his departure.
If brought to Ames, a reunion for the Cyclones will be underway, as Roehl was Iowa State’s assistant head coach and running back coach in 2024 before accepting a job with the Lions.
During his time with the Cyclones in the 2024 season, Roehl guided the team to improvement from 13 rushing touchdowns in 2023 to 27 in 2024. In his lone season, Iowa State rushed for 2,247 yards and averaged 4.4 yards per carry, the school’s best since 2021.
Although Roehl’s return will be without Campbell at the helm, Roehl brings a resume that holds multiple roles on the offensive side of the ball, such as coaching running backs, tight ends and fullbacks. He also has experience being an assistant coach for seven FCS National Championships.
Despite the absence of Campbell, Roehl already had past connections with the new Cyclone head coach, Rogers, as the two were rivals and competed against each other back in 2007. Rogers, as a South Dakota State linebacker, made a stop against North Dakota State wide receiver Roehl.
At North Dakota State, Roehl spent 11 years, five of which were as the offensive coordinator. In 2023, he guided the Bison to lead the nation in 3,560 rushing yards, 47 rushing touchdowns and 74 overall touchdowns. Under Roehl’s coaching, NDSU ranked among the top five nationally in rushing offense four times and paced the nation in rushing touchdowns for three straight seasons.
