The Denver Broncos don’t have much opportunity for a quarterback to play behind Bo Nix, but Sam Ehlinger isn’t going anywhere.

Ehlinger has spent the season on the Broncos’ practice squad and that is apparently right where he wants to be. When the Broncos waived him this summer to get down to the 53-man roster limit, he was approached by other teams with a chance to join their 53-man roster. Knowing that the Broncos planned to bring him onto their practice squad, he turned those opportunities down.

Ehlinger has done that again.

The Indianapolis Colts, still in the thick of the AFC playoff race, have a major need for a quarterback after Daniel Jones tore his Achilles tendon last Sunday and is out for the season.

Reports have surfaced stating that the Colts contacted Ehlinger on Sunday night following Jones’ injury.

Ehlinger turned the Colts down, which likely included a starting quarterback job for an 8-5 team, to stay in Denver. Instead, the Colts made what seems like one of the more desperate moves in quite awhile by bringing back 44-year-old Philip Rivers.

Ehlinger will remain the QB3 in Denver, but he clearly likes what the Broncos are building and enjoys working with Bo Nix and quarterbacks coach Davis Webb. Ehlinger spent the first four years of his career with the Colts after they selected him in the sixth round of the 2021 NFL Draft. It makes sense that the Colts came calling in their time of need and it’s a bit surprising that he chose to stay in Denver.
