The Pittsburgh Steelers released veteran tailback Trey Sermon from their practice squad on Wednesday, adding offensive tackle David Sharpe in his place.
This marks the second time this season that the Steelers have released Sermon. They waived him and re-signed him last month. Sermon initially started his tenure with the Steelers after a tryout during rookie minicamp in May.
Sermon was a third-round pick in the 2021 NFL Draft. He spent the first season of his professional career with the San Francisco 49ers and has also spent time with the Philadelphia Eagles and Indianapolis Colts.

Sermon played in four games for the Steelers this season, returning a pair of kicks for 51 yards. He played mainly on special teams, logging 47 snaps on those units aand one snap of offense against the Indianapolis Colts in Week 9. He also recorded one tackle while playing on the team’s kickoff, kickoff return, punt and punt return teams.
He hadn’t appeared in a contest for the team since its 25-10 road loss to the Los Angeles Chargers last month, though.
During a three-game stretch with Ryan Day’s Ohio State Buckeyes in 2020, Sermon rushed for 636 yards and four touchdowns. That effort included a 331-yard day against Northwestern in the Big Ten Championship game.
