The Indianapolis Colts were desperate for a quarterback this week.

Daniel Jones has a season-ending Achilles injury, Riley Leonard is dealing with a knee injury and Anthony Richardson is on injured reserve with an orbital fracture. So the Colts started calling old friends, desperate for a solution at QB.

One of the QBs that Indy reached out to was Denver Broncos practice squad quarterback Sam Ehlinger, according to a report from the Denver Post’s Parker Gabriel. Ehlinger spent the first four years of his career with the Colts, but he turned down an opportunity to reunite with his former team.

“We’re really happy here and enjoy the organization, the path we’re on and what we’re building,” Ehlinger told Parker. “I want to be part of that. I was in Indianapolis for four years and I love everybody over there. It’s just a difficult situation, obviously.”

The Broncos are currently the No. 1 playoff seed in the AFC while Indy’s fighting to stay in the playoff hunt at 8-5. This marks the second time this season that Ehlinger has turned down a 53-man roster spot elsewhere to remain on Denver’s practice squad. He’s clearly bought into Sean Payton’s program, even in a QB3 role.

The Colts did manage to bring back Philip Rivers, who is coming out of retirement at age 44, and he could start this weekend. Indy also promoted backup QB Brett Rypien from the practice squad to the active roster.
