Earlier this week, NorthJersey.com’s Art Stapleton reported that the New York Giants are interested in interviewing Freeman.

“Good for Notre Dame declining the bowl invitation,” Stapleton wrote. “More time for Marcus Freeman to prepare for his interview with the Giants … and for the Giants to find that speculated $50 million in the couch cushions for the buyout.”

While Freeman is still with the Fighting Irish, the program will have some turnover on its staff before next season.

Per Jim Comparoni of On3’s SpartanMag, Max Bullough has accepted a position as linebackers coach and co-defensive coordinator gig with Michigan State. Bullough played as a linebacker for the Spartans, a rival of the Irish.

“Pat Fitzgerald has secured the latest addition to his football staff, and it’s a major one,” Comparoni wrote. “Former Michigan State linebacking great Max Bullough has accepted a job offer from Fitzgerald and will join the Spartan coaching staff immediately, SpartanMag has confirmed with two sources who have direct knowledge of the matter.”

Michigan State head coach fired Jonathan Smith following a 4-8 season. MSU hired former Northwestern head coach Pat Fitzgerald to replace Smith.

Notre Dame is set to host Michigan State next season on Sept. 19. It will be the first time the “Battle for the Megaphone” has been played since 2017, when ND defeated the Spartans 38-18. The Irish lead the all-time series 47-29-1.

The Irish had significant turnover on their defensive staff after playing in the national championship in January. ND defensive coordinator Al Golden left for the same gig with the Cincinnati Bengals.

It took first-year defensive coordinator Chris Ash a couple of games to get his squad on the same page, helping to lead to the Irish’s two early losses that ultimately left them out of the CFP.
