JaMarcus Shephard is moving quite swiftly to get his inaugural Oregon State staff together.

And Shephard is poised to add a veteran defensive play-caller with stints throughout the South to his Beavers regime.

Sources tell FootballScoop that Shephard is hiring Lance Guidry to run the Oregon State defense.

It’s a reunion of sorts for the two, who spent a year together on staff at Western Kentucky last decade.

Guidry has steadily climbed the coaching ranks, particularly ascending this decade.

He was Charles Huff’s defensive coordinator at Marshall before landing the opportunity to run the defense for Mario Cristobal and the Miami Hurricanes.

Guidry also brings a veteran voice with previous head coaching experience to Shephard’s staff; he served atop the FCS McNeese State University program for three years from 2016-18.

Guidry and Shephard also both trace their coaching origins to the high school ranks; Guidry in Louisiana and Shephard in his native Louisiana.

This past season, Guidry served as a defensive analyst on Blake Baker’s top-25 nationally ranked LSU defensive unit. The Tigers were inside the top 25 in both scoring defense and total defense.

That move came after Guidry guided the Miami defense for two years before he and Cristobal parted ways after the 2024 season. He coached safeties at Florida Atlantic and then ran Marshall’s Thundering Herd defense in 2021-22, helping the Charles Huff-coached Herd upset top-10 Notre Dame at Notre Dame in 2022.

A Louisiana native, Guidry is set to coach on the West Coast for the first time in his 25-year collegiate coaching career.

Oregon State hired Shephard away from Alabama to replace Trent Bray, whom the school dismissed in mid-October less than two years into his tenure as the replacement for Jonathan Smith.

The Beavers have struggled since being left out of the Big Ten Conference expansion that essentially dissolved the Pac-12.

But the league is reforming with several new members, including Fresno State, San Diego State, Texas State and more set to formally join the league prior to the 2026 season.

Shephard’s first game as Oregon State head coach is set for Sept. 5, 2026, at Houston. The Beavers then in Shephard’s first-ever home game as head coach are poised to host Texas Tech, the 2025 Big 12 Conference champion and No. 4 overall seed in the second-ever 12-team College Football Playoff. The following week the Beavers host FCS powerhouse Montana, which is still alive in this year’s FCS Playoffs.

Oregon State’s full schedule for next season has not been revealed due the conference realignment.Â
