With Forbes, Durant, Williams and Witherspoon, the Rams aren’t lacking depth at corner

There’s no questioning the Los Angeles Rams’ depth at cornerback. They have plenty of it. With Emmanuel Forbes Jr., Cobie Durant, Darious Williams and Ahkello Witherspoon, the Rams have the ability to rotate players and mix-and-match personnel to their opponent’s.

All that depth doesn’t mean the Rams have a clear-cut starting tandem on the outside, though. They’ve used a variety of combinations and even with four weeks remaining, they’re still trying to figure out the best way to deploy their corners when everyone is healthy.

That’s because they haven’t had a full complement of corners available practically all year; Witherspoon was on injured reserve most of the season and Williams missed Week 14 with an injury. Sean McVay said on the “Coach McVay Show” that the Rams are continuing to sort out their cornerback group as the season winds down.

“I think it’s a luxury that we do have to have four guys on the outside that you have tremendous confidence in,” McVay said. “I think you want to continue to be able to figure out, what’s the best way to be able to take advantage of those three or those four guys, depending on who’s up on our 48 on game day? I think Aubrey (Pleasant) has such a good feel but there’s a lot of snaps throughout the course of the game. I think it’s important to let guys get into a rhythm, but I also think it’s important to keep them fresh throughout. The game flow dictates that and sometimes it’s matchup-oriented. Or who are we playing? What are the different plans of attack that we have relative to our coverage menu and different play opps? I was pleased with the way those three guys played yesterday. There’s always going to be some learning ops but getting D-Will back healthy, those are positive problems for us to work through as a coaching staff.”

Against the Cardinals last week, Forbes played 74%, Durant played 71% and Witherspoon played 58% of the snaps. Forbes and Durant appear to be the team’s preferred tandem on the outside but Witherspoon had been playing well before getting hurt and finished last season as their CB1.

Williams seems to be the odd man out for now but the Rams could use all four cornerbacks down the stretch in case of injury. And that doesn’t even include Josh Wallace in the slot or Quentin Lake if/when he returns from IR for the playoffs.

It’s a good problem to have, as McVay said, but the coaches would probably like to have a go-to duo that can be counted on each week.
