PITTSBURGH — Steelers star edge rusher T.J. Watt is being evaluated at a local hospital after experiencing lung discomfort Wednesday, the team announced in a statement Thursday. His status for Monday’s game against the Miami Dolphins is in question.

Watt, a four-time All-Pro and 2021 Defensive Player of the Year, played 70 defensive snaps and two on special teams during the Steelers’ 27-22 win in Baltimore on Sunday. He took part in all regular media availabilities after the game and appeared in good spirits.

On Wednesday, the Steelers did not hold practice, as they modified their schedule because of a “Monday Night Football” game on the horizon. According to the team’s statement, Watt experienced lung discomfort while at the practice facility Wednesday, and will not practice Thursday.

Watt, who signed a three-year, $123 million extension last offseason, is one of the NFL’s highest-paid defensive players for a reason. He’s a central piece of the Steelers’ defense that relies on sacks and splash plays to get off the field. In addition to what Watt provides as a pass rusher, he’s also an important part of their run defense. Pittsburgh will face a Dolphins rushing attack that’s averaging a league-high 192 yards per game on the ground since Week 10.

If Watt is unable to play Monday, it would be a significant blow. Alex Highsmith and Nick Herbig would likely be the two starters, with rookie Jack Sawyer serving as the primary backup on both sides.
