The Denver Broncos are preparing to face the Green Bay Packers in a potential Super Bowl preview this Sunday, and in the lead up to the Mile High City clash, the Broncos have announced a roster decision.

Denver has decided to waive tight end Marcedes Lewis in what Parker Gabriel of The Denver Post called a “procedural move,” noting that Lewis will probably be back on the practice squad assuming he clears waivers.

The 41-year-old Lewis is the second- longest tenured player in the NFL behind quarterback Aaron Rodgers, having entered the league as a first-round pick of the Jacksonville Jaguars back in 2006.

Lewis spent the first 12 seasons of his career with the Jaguars, making a Pro Bowl in 2010 when he hauled in 58 receptions for 700 yards and 10 touchdowns.

Otherwise, Lewis never really lived up to his lofty expectations after coming out of UCLA. However, the long-time veteran has certainly managed to stick around as a terrific locker-room presence.

He spent five seasons with the Packers between 2018 and 2022 before making his way to the Chicago Bears for two years. Lewis then joined the Broncos this past October.

The Long Beach, Ca. native has amassed a grand total of 11 catches since 2022 and hasn’t posted 500 receiving yards in a single campaign since 2012. What’s more, Lewis has only eclipsed 300 yards twice since then.

Nevertheless, Lewis has remained in the league and has become somewhat of a cult legend throughout his NFL tenure, and on a young Denver squad, he definitely has value.

The Broncos are 11-2 and have won 10 games in a row. Meanwhile, the Packers are sitting at 9-3-1 and are riding a four-game winning streak. This is absolutely a major test for Denver. We’ll see how the Broncos handle it.
