The initial hope was that the New York Jets would have one injured quarterback return to practice on Wednesday ahead of Sunday’s Week 15 clash versus the Jacksonville Jaguars.
That ultimately wasn’t the case, with both Tyrod Taylor and Justin Fields still sidelined by injury. The only quarterbacks available at practice were preseason options Adrian Martinez and Brady Cook.
Martinez was re-signed to the Jets‘ practice squad on Wednesday. He was with the team throughout training camp and the preseason. In three exhibition appearances, Martinez completed 30-of-51 passing attempts (58.8%) for 352 yards, one touchdown, and two interceptions. After being waived during final cuts, he briefly joined the San Francisco 49ers before reuniting with the Jets this week.
If Taylor and/or Fields are unable to play Sunday, rookie undrafted free agent Cook would be in-line to receive his first career start. Cook saw his first NFL action against the Miami Dolphins in Week 14 after Taylor left hurt.
The former Missouri signal-caller completed 14-of-30 passing attempts for 163 yards, two touchdowns, and zero interceptions.
The 9-4 Jaguars, who lead the AFC South division, would enter Sunday’s contest overconfident if Cook and Martinez are the Jets’ quarterbacks. It’s tough to blame them. Cook didn’t look ready to play quarterback in the NFL.
