The Pittsburgh Steelers came up with a huge win in Week 14, beating the Baltimore Ravens. That’s put them in first place in the AFC North. However, the race for the division crown isn’t over yet. A few bad weeks could kick the Steelers out of the playoff picture. They need to continue playing winning football. That means beating the red-hot Miami Dolphins this week, too. Chris Simms doesn’t think the Steelers will get the job done, though.
“Miami’s been playing pretty good football,” Simms said Thursday on his Unbuttoned podcast. “And doing it with not necessarily the pass game. It’s been the run game and Mike McDaniel sticking with that. They’re dangerous that way.
“I don’t think Pittsburgh’s offense is gonna be able to do a whole lot on Miami, too. I think Miami’s feeling it right now. And I feel like Pittsburgh is gonna be too relaxed this week because they beat Baltimore. They’re one of those teams, in my opinion. I’m gonna take the Dolphins 23-20 in Pittsburgh. Sorry, Renegade.”
The Dolphins had a brutal start to this season. At one point, they were 2-7. However, they’ve caught fire, winning their last four games.
Simms is correct that their run game has been a big reason for that, and that could be a problem for the Steelers. The Dolphins’ rushing offense is ranked eighth in the league. Miami put up 239 yards on 41 carries last week. Also, starter De’Von Achane left with an injury after only seven carries.
That wasn’t a fluke, either. The Dolphins ran for 164 yards in Week 13, 169 yards in Week 11, and 197 yards in Week 10. Their run game has been the engine for their win streak.
That doesn’t bode well for the Steelers. While they played well last week, their defense still wasn’t great against the run. The Ravens ran for 217 yards as a team, with Derrick Henry posting 94 yards. Additionally, the Steelers struggled with Ravens backup running back Keaton Mitchell, who’s shiftier than Henry and has a similar build to Achane.
While Simms is worried about the Steelers’ offense, it’s their defense that could be in real trouble. It’s currently unclear if Achane is going to play Monday night. However, Jaylen Wright, his backup, shouldn’t be underestimated. He’s a speedster, running a 4.38 40-yard dash at the NFL Scouting Combine. Also, he had 107 yards on 24 carries last week. He could give the Steelers problems.
The Steelers’ biggest saving grace might be that this game will be played in Pittsburgh. The Dolphins don’t have a good history of playing in the cold. Furthermore, the Steelers don’t seem relaxed like Simms believes. They know what’s at stake. A loss this week could reenergize the Ravens and seriously hurt the Steelers’ playoff hopes.
