Phillip Lindsay, the Colorado kid, will be honored by the Denver Broncos on Sunday afternoon.

Lindsay co-hosts “The Drive” on Denver Sports 104.3 The Fan with Zach Bye each weekday from 2-6 p.m. MT and made the announcement on Thursday.

“The wheels started turning in my head after watching what Philip Rivers did. And I was like, ‘okay, do I have what it takes to keep doing this?’ And the answer is no, I don’t. But what the Denver Broncos want me to do is two things. They want me to be the Legend of the Game (on Sunday). So, I’m going to pump that damn crowd up,” Lindsay told Bye. “Me and the little man, Phil Phil, are going to be pumping the crowd up before kickoff.”

Phillip Lindsay joked that he was going to take his shirt off, but his wife shut that idea down. He may have his son do it, while the rest of the family watches in a suite provided by the Broncos.

Lindsay took the NFL by storm as an undrafted free agent in 2018. The Denver South and CU Buffs product chose to sign with the Broncos and it was a great decision.

He rushed for 1,037 yards in his rookie year to go along with nine touchdowns and made the Pro Bowl. For an encore in 2019, Lindsay went for another 1,000-yard season and added seven touchdowns. He battled a variety of injuries in 2020 before “mutually parting ways” with the Broncos after that season.

Phillip Lindsay signed with the Houston Texans and had stints with the Miami Dolphins and Indianapolis Colts before ending up back in Denver and launching his second career in radio.

It didn’t end particularly well with the Broncos, as fans were upset they gave Melvin Gordon a $16-million deal in 2020 and didn’t extend Lindsay. Denver also signed Mike Boone in free agency in 2021, hours before they rescinded a restricted free-agent tender on Lindsay and let him find a new team.

“Bittersweet for me, I would’ve loved to be here as a Denver Bronco for the rest of my life. I didn’t want to leave. Business took over and that’s just how it goes. But if it were up to me I’d still a Bronco, but it is what it is,” Phillip Lindsay said. “Anytime you get fired, you’re being replaced, you’re going to feel some type of way. In my case you feel like you’ve done so much, and yet not enough to stay there a little bit longer. And there’s reasons for everything.”

On Sunday against the Green Bay Packers, as mentioned, Phillip Lindsay will hype up the crowd at Empower Field at Mile High pregame. He’ll also be honored on the field during the contest, signing a football and throwing it to the fans. A 30-second tribute video of his time in Denver will air as well.

“I think this was fitting for me. Being in Denver, playing for the Broncos, was an all-time dream. I mean, come on guys, playing here, high school, college, and then I got an opportunity to put on the orange and blue,” Lindsay said. “I’ll never take that opportunity for granted.”

It’s a nice gesture by the Broncos and a good full-circle ending for a hometown favorite. The business of pro sports can be cruel, but Phillip Lindsay and the organization are both moving forward. He emphasized he’s excited to be back on the football field again, so close to a game he loves, while also being grateful to do media full-time.
