The Indianapolis Colts (8-5) visit the Seattle Seahawks (10-3) in NFL Week 15 action, and these teams are in a much different spots.

The Colts’ season has disintegrated, losing four of their past five games, and facing a desperate quarterback situation (either Riley Leonard, Brett Rypien or Philip Rivers will start) against the NFL’s toughest schedule over the closing weeks.

Seattle has won three straight games and has not allowed a touchdown for two straight weeks. The Seahawks are in the thick of the NFC West race, and the No. 1 NFC playoff seed is in reach.

BetMGM’s betting line reflects this. The Seahawks are 13.5-point favorites.

NFL Week 15 predictions, picks: Colts face a ‘brutal’ situation as they try to cling to AFC playoff hopes

“If you were writing a Hollywood script, you’d have the Colts finding some wacky way to come from behind and pull this out. I just can’t figure out how that script would go. Though I don’t think this will be near the train wreck so many around the league believe it will be, playing in the league’s loudest stadium in constant rain with a QB who’s unretired after five years and against one of the best defenses in the league is just too tall a hurdle to clear.”

“Almost everyone has written off the Colts after Daniel Jones’ unfortunate season-ending injury. The Rivers experiment could easily turn into a calamity, but Indianapolis was competitive the last two seasons without quality quarterback play because of a talented roster.”

“This might be 44-year-old Philip Rivers at quarterback for the Colts. It won’t matter. This is a brutal test against a dominant defense in Seattle. Look for a big game from that defense, no matter who plays quarterback for the Colts. Sam Darnold will hit some big shots against a Colts defense that has struggled in recent weeks. Seahawks big.”

“The return of Philip Rivers is fascinating. It ultimately may not make much of a difference against an elite team.”

“In a month, Daniel Jones went from locking in a huge, new contract to playing with a broken leg — turns out, that’s not a great idea — to grandpa Philip Rivers walking in and asking him if he can have Jones’ jersey number. What a brutal sport. The Colts were actually in the game against the Jaguars last week when Jones went down, but Jonathan Taylor fumbled and then was stuffed on fourth-and-1, and the rout was on. Sam Darnold and the Seahawks improve to 11-3 ATS.”

“The Colts have eight wins, and it wasn’t just because of Daniel Jones. They have been a pretty good team this season, despite a recent slide. Yes, it’s scary to depend on 44-year-old Philip Rivers or whoever plays quarterback against one of the NFL’s best defenses. It could get ugly. But as is said often in this space, double-digit underdogs usually look hopeless, and then they somehow cover.”

“Because they didn’t just implode? OK, so maybe it’s a bit melodramatic to suggest the Colts disintegrated the moment they lost Daniel Jones for the season, since they started crumbling well before he tore his Achilles, with their current three-game skid dating back to Week 12, when he started playing through a fractured fibula. As with most QB revivals, it seems fair to argue that the roster and play-calling regime around Jones was as much a driver of Indianapolis’ success this year as the QB himself — and it’s possible that infrastructure was hitting its limit, based on the team’s bottom-eight ranking in EPA per play on offense and defense over the past three weeks. If the non-QB components in Indy were sturdier — like, say, as sturdy as the pieces assembled around Sam Darnold in Seattle — I would give more serious thought to the Colts’ chances. The truth is, I would be picking Seattle even if Jones were fully healthy — even if they weren’t about to potentially turn to a QB who is much closer to his 50th birthday than your typical active pro football player. Mike Macdonald has built the better version of what Indianapolis looked like it was possibly shaping into earlier this season: a rugged outfit capable of competing at a high level with just the right amount of competence under center. The Seahawks have ranked eighth in the NFL in EPA per play on offense and first in EPA per play on defense since their Week 8 bye. They stack another W on Sunday.”
