Alex Smith reflects on his gruesome leg injury seven years later

Former NFL QB Alex Smith reflects on his leg injury and how his family, friends, and the Washington Commanders organization helped him overcome it.

Sports Seriously

A stone’s throw away from Niagara Falls and just across the border from a nation that proudly sports a maple leaf on their flag is the city of Buffalo, New York.

It’s known for snowy winters, buffalo wings and Buffalo Bills football. There are the NHL’s Sabres too, but they’ve become somewhat of an afterthought with an increasingly long playoff drought. While Buffalo struggles on ice, the city is over the moon with the hometown Bills.

Led by Josh Allen, the Bills are no longer the same mediocre team that many came to know for the better part of the 21st century. Having made the playoffs in each of the last six seasons, it’s clear they’re a long way away from the days of Trent Edwards and Ryan Fitzpatrick.

Instead the Bills are now Super Bowl contenders and a team that is feared by everyone except the Kansas City Chiefs.

As usual, the Bills’ story is one that can’t be told without that pesky team from Missouri getting in the way. Buffalo’s regular season slate will include one matchup against those bullies in red, but is another playoff matchup in their future?

That’s a story for a different day, but the reigning league MVP Allen will have to be even better to reach the mountaintop.

Before worrying about Week 19 and beyond, there are 18-weeks to plan for the regular season. Get those fall plans ready, Bills Mafia. Here’s a look at your schedule for the 2025 NFL regular season.

It’s no secret that the Bills are one of the best teams in the AFC. Does that mean they can waltz into the playoffs without any issues?

The official answer won’t come for many months, but variance is a real thing in the NFL. Buffalo went 13-4 a year ago and sports an improved roster, particularly on defense.

Allen has never shown much regard for his own body, but he might want to shy away from some of those bigger hits going forward after dealing with multiple ailments last season. He’s been remarkably durable since entering the league, however, Buffalo’s outlook takes a significant hit if Allen is sidelined as those hits pile up.

More importantly, Buffalo has played a lot of football in recent years, despite not appearing in the Super Bowl.

There are always surprise teams and a pair of them could be in their own division. The Jets and Patriots both brought in coaches – Aaron Glenn and Mike Vrabel – that design their teams to play a tough, physical style. In other words, those might not be free, or easy, wins this season.

The Bills should cruise to another division title if they stay healthy. Buffalo’s ceiling is probably 14 wins, but given the ebbs and flows of a NFL season, we’ll settle in at 12 for Allen and co.
