The New York Giants are looking for a new head coach after firing Brian Daboll after their Week 10 debacle in Chicago. Interim HC Mike Kafka has done an admirable job filling in, but it’s clear he’s in over his head.

Inconsistent game plans, strange staff shuffles, and bizarre pressers all but confirm he’ll be Big Blue’s fourth coach fired this season, joining Daboll, Shane Bowen, and Bryan Cox.

General manager Joe Schoen will be leading the coaching search, which is expected to begin shortly after “Black Monday” — the day after the regular season ends when struggling coaches typically get fired. It’s unclear which other head coaches will be let go, but there will be no shortage of candidates to fill the open positions.

According to Sports Illustrated’s Connor Orr, there could be as many as 43 names in the mix for the open head coaching jobs. One name he singled out as a potential fit for the G-Men, and one that would have Eagles fans celebrating in the streets, is Philadelphia offensive coordinator Kevin Patullo.

Giants linked to Eagles OC Kevin Patullo in head coach search

Just ask an Eagles fan how they feel about their offensive coordinator. I’m willing to bet they immediately trash the guy. They wanted this guy out yesterday, so the thought of their OC being linked to NY of all places will have them laughing and cheering, and being even more annoying than they already are.

Patullo’s been struggling since taking over as Philly’s OC after Kellen Moore left for the New Orleans Saints gig last season, but that didn’t stop Orr from linking him to Big Blue’s vacancy:

“With the Giants’ job being open, it would be a surprise if a division rival did not bring him in for an interview. “

It’s an interesting thought experiment, but one that’d likely get a hard pass from Giants fans. The biggest gripe with Patullo is the steep decline in offensive production from last year to this year. Philly fans will argue he’s not overly innovative, he doesn’t get the most out of his stars, and he struggles with situational football.

A vanilla offense, underused star talent, and poor situational play-calling… sounds like every Giants coach of the last decade. He’s exactly the kind of hire Giants fans dread, which probably makes him the front-runner.

Jokes aside, what’s the harm in giving the guy an interview? Honestly. It’s Schoen’s job to do everything in his power to find the right head coach this time. If it means meeting with the guy who’s helped Nick Sirianni sustain consistent success while cycling through four OCs in five years in the City of Brotherly Love, then so be it. That’s what Schoen should be doing.

The 44-year-old OC has been here, he’s been there, he’s been everywhere since becoming an offensive assistant with the Kansas City Chiefs in 2007. He’s worked with the Chiefs, Bills, Titans, Jets, Texas A&M, and Colts before spending the past five years with the Eagles.

His struggles are well-documented, but a statistical drop-off year-over-year won’t be what does him in as a potential candidate. The G-Men are on record as wanting a CEO-type leader who can build a winning culture, develop talent, and foster accountability throughout the locker room.

It’s unclear if Patullo can deliver on all three phases, but that’s what Schoen and Giants brass need to figure out. Philly fans will scoff at the narrative, but let’s be honest — what don’t they scoff at? They complain about everything, even when their teams win.
