When NFL owners meet again this week, two rules could be changed, and Commanders fans will be watching closely.
During the earlier owners’ meetings, the owners determined to table the “Tush Push” or the “Brotherly Shove” from whichever perspective you approach that one. The Eagles‘ rugby-style quarterback shove play will supposedly be voted upon, though speculation still warrants why it was tabled at all. Why wasn’t there a vote at the last meetings?

Interestingly enough, the Commanders’ tactics of attempting to time a leap over the offensive line to get the quarterback drew more interest around the league in discussing the play. Others had already brought up the stylistic concerns that the play was more reminiscent of something you might see in rugby than previously in the NFL.
Also, the Detroit Lions proposed a change in the NFL’s playoff seeding system. The proposed change sought to reward wild-card teams with better records than division winners. Presently, the four division winners in both the NFC and AFC are rewarded with the top four seeds in the playoff tournament, regardless of how good or bad their record might actually be.
Washington fans will recall how Washington was only 7-9 in 2020, had not beaten a good quarterback all year, and yet were given the fourth seed in the playoffs and consequently were rewarded with a home playoff game in the first round against the Tampa Bay Bucs. Washington lost anyway to the eventual Super Bowl champion Bucs, but the NFL is looking to discuss again in their next meetings how they might tinker with the current system rewarding teams with a better record.
Pro Football Talk reported that the owners had discussed perhaps if a division winner had a losing record, like, say, 8-9, then that team would have to go on the road in the playoffs’ first round. Mike Florio also suggested another idea being discussed: if the division winner won a wild-card round playoff game, they would lose their home-field advantage for the second round game.
