The Seattle Seahawks agreed to a rare in-season extension with tight end Eric Saubert on Saturday, according to ESPN’s Seahawks reporter Brady Henderson and NFL insider Jordan Schultz.
Saubert signed with Seattle in the offseason, but hasn’t seen much on-the-field action since he suffered a calf injury in Week 7 that sent him to IR. Primarily a blocking tight end, he has only one catch for 12 yards in the seven games he’s played in this season.
The Seahawks brought Saubert over from the San Francisco 49ers, where he played a similar blocking role, appearing in 35% of the 49ers’ offensive snaps in 2024. Notably, Saubert worked with Klay Kubiak, brother of the Seahawks’ current offensive coordinator, Klint Kubiak, in San Francisco.
Saubert entered the league in 2017 as a fifth-round draft pick of the Atlanta Falcons and has bounced around the league in his nine years. His best season came in 2022 as a member of the Denver Broncos, when the Drake alum caught 15 passes for 148 yards and six touchdowns.
The 31-year-old was activated off IR this week and is questionable to make his return to the Seahawks’ lineup against the Indianapolis Colts. If he can go, it would be needed depth for Seattle with the news that fellow tight end Elijah Arroyo is headed to IR this week.
