The New York Jets’ defense collapsed on Sunday in a 48–20 loss to the Jacksonville Jaguars. The 48 points allowed marked the most the New York has allowed all season. The defense was exceptionally bad in the first half, allowing 31 points going into halftime.
The Jets defense simply couldn’t stop Jaguars quarterback Trevor Lawrence, marking a historical day for the 26 year old.
“He produced the 10th game with at least 5 Pass TD and a Rush TD in NFL history (regular season or playoffs). Lawrence is the first player in NFL history to record 5 Pass TD, a Rush TD and 50 Rush yds in a game,” wrote ESPN’s Cimini.
Responding to Lawrence’s strong performance, safety Tony Adams said, “Special player. Had a great game today. Credit to them, but also, we’ve got to be better. That simple” (SNYJets on X).
A few defensive leaders declined to speak to the media after the game.
“Quincy Williams, usually media-friendly, declined to speak with reporters: “I have nothing positive to say.” Jermaine Johnson also declined”, wrote Cimini.

Players on Defense Speak Out
“If we’re not limiting the points then we can’t really expect ourselves to win a game,” said safety Malachi Moore (SNYJets on X).
“The guys that are on the field have to execute every play. Can’t be good two plays and then one play, we’re off. Has to be consistent and you have to sustain that for four quarters,” said linebacker Jamien Sherwood (SNYJets on X).
Going into the final three games of the season, members of the defense want to finish strong.
Sherwood said, “The previous two weeks weren’t up to par. Obviously, not the standard that we have set for ourselves and not the standard that we have going forward. I want to see the guys fight, finish and have pride about playing for the New York Jets” (SNYJets on X).
Adams said, “Going out there and being able to understand that it’s bigger than you. You’re playing for respect, you’re playing for the name on the back of that jersey. I know these guys are going to do it. I’ve been around some of these guys for a very long time, so I know their hearts” (SNYJets on X).

The Defense Needs Answers
Much of the draft discussion has centered on quarterback as the top priority this offseason, with some even suggesting the use of multiple high draft picks to trade up for one. However, given how the defense has struggled, there is a strong case to be made against that approach in favor of using those draft resources to help improve the defense.
For example, a clear hole on the defense has been the pass rush, which was basically nonexistent on Sunday.
Cimini wrote, “The Jets had no sacks and only 2 QB hits.”
The Jets defense, which allowed 438 total yards against the Jaguars, will look to bounce back next week against the New Orleans Saints.
