Before kickoff on Sunday Night Football the Minnesota Vikings found themselves eliminated from playoff contention. That was always likely as they came into the contest carrying just a 5-8 record. Playing spoiler though, they jumped at a chance to send the Dallas Cowboys to the same fate.

It was a nice showing for J.J. McCarthy and team, but that doesn’t mean everyone made it out unscathed. Jonathan Greenard missed time earlier this year, and now after 12 games, his season is over.

Surgery coming for MN Vikings Jonathan Greenard

Jonathan Greenard was on the field Sunday night for the Minnesota Vikings. He also recorded a sack, just his third of the year, against Dak Prescott. Unfortunately he finished the game on the sidelines and will now undergo season-ending surgery.

Greenard has tried to play through the shoulder injury and had an exceptional game on Sunday night. After reg-aggravating the shoulder issue though, he will now get it fixed.

Facing Dallas, Greenard picked up four tackles and had three quarterback hits. The pressure was a season best, and he played 62.9% of the defensive snaps. There’s no denying that Greenard ended the year on a high note.

Unfortunately it has been a trying season overall for the 28-year-old. After making his first Pro Bowl last season, the Minnesota Vikings signed Greenard to an extension. He finished with just three sacks this season after having 12 a year ago.

Given the current state of the Vikings, it makes sense for Greenard to get his injury fixed and look towards next year. He has two years left on his deal, but Minnesota could move on this offseason with $9.9 million in dead cap if they chose.
