Commanders offensive lineman Sam Cosmi spent his off day with Special Olympics Ambassadors at Dulles International Airport, learning the in’s and out’s of their job.
DULLES, Va. — About 24 hours after the Washington Commanders defeated the New York Giants, offensive lineman Sam Cosmi was studying a different kind of playbook — customer service.
Cosmi spent his off day on Monday at Dulles International Airport learning how to assist travelers alongside Special Olympics athletes who work as customer service ambassadors for United Airlines.
For the athletes, the experience was just as meaningful.
“It was just so cool,” said John Gionfriddo, one of the ambassadors who helped train Cosmi. “I thought it was great. It’s just a fantastic opportunity in life.”
Gionfriddo and his teammates are known for helping passengers navigate the busy airport, offering directions and answering questions from travelers who may be overwhelmed or unsure where to go.
On this day, that included guiding an NFL player.
“It’s not every day you get to meet a real NFL player,” Gionfriddo said.
Cosmi said he was impressed by the ambassadors’ knowledge and patience.
“From what I’ve seen, it’s a lot of people that don’t know where to go or what to do, and they know exactly,” Cosmi said. “They’re on top of it.”
He added that the ambassadors play a critical role at the airport, where answering questions can be more challenging than it looks.
The visit was also about visibility and inclusion.
“I think it’s a group of people that are just not shown enough light,” Cosmi said. “It’s important to include them and show love. That’s what touches my heart, and that’s why I do it.”
When asked which was harder — memorizing an NFL playbook or learning the layout of Dulles — Cosmi didn’t hesitate.
“Probably the airport right now,” he said. “There are a lot of components here, especially at Dulles, that could be confusing.”
By the end of the day, Cosmi had clearly made an impression.
“He’s a lot taller than I thought he was going to be,” Gionfriddo said with a laugh. “But what a great guy.”
Gionfriddo said he would give Cosmi’s performance on the job a perfect score — a 10 out of 10.
