LINCOLN, Neb. (KOLN) – Lincoln Youth Football hosted their inaugural girls flag football camp on Sunday in Cook Pavillion.
The camp was put on in partnership with the Lincoln Community Learning Centers, and looked to encourage girls to pursue their interest in the fast-growing sport by sharpening their skills with drills, sprints, and plenty of coaching.
Those running the camp included former and current Husker football players as well as members of the Midland University women’s flag football team, who competed in Memorial Stadium on Friday as part of the Husker Games. ’
Mayor Leirion Gaylor Baird also spoke at the event before displaying a proclamation marking April 27th as Girls Flag Football Day in Nebraska.
“It’s exciting to watch these girls come out, and see the excitement of all the kids out here today,” Mike Selvage, the commissioner of Lincoln Youth Football, said. “Plus the excitement that’s growing around the sport, it just makes it so much more fun.”
This camp comes less than one month ahead of Lincoln Youth Football’s first season of girls 7-on-7 flag football, and in honor of the mayor’s proclamation, LYF is lowering the fee to join a team from $135 to $85.
That league is available to girls ages 8 through 15 and begins on May 13. Those interested can sign up for it on the Lincoln Youth Football League’s website.
