The Patriots opened up a spot on their 53-man roster on Monday when they waived linebacker Caleb Murphy.
Murphy was claimed by New England in October off the Los Angeles Chargers practice squad. He appeared in five games for the Patriots this season and totaled two tackles.
The 25-year-old was an undrafted free agent out of Division II Ferris State. He set an NCAA single-season record in 2022 with 25.5 sacks and totaled 39 tackles for loss.
Murphy spent time with coach Mike Vrabel while they were both with the Tennessee Titans.
To fill the roster spot, New England signed linebacker Chad Muma off the Indianapolis Colts practice squad, according to NFL insider Jordan Schultz.
The Patriots could use the depth at the position. Robert Spillane didn’t play in New England’s 35-31 loss to the Buffalo Bills on Sunday due to an injury. His absence proved to be crucial, as two of Josh Allen’s touchdowns beat Jack Gibbens and Christian Elliss.
