There’s no denying that Las Vegas Raiders veteran linebacker Devin White has been incredibly productive as a tackler this season. Through 14 games, White ranks second in the NFL in tackles with 149. There’s always been some debate over the true meaning of tackle production.

The NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport took that as an opportunity to praise White on social media. It felt a little random, and welcomed speculation that Rapoport was doing a favor for White’s agent. After all, the veteran linebacker is on an expiring contract.

Rapoport claims White is a candidate for Comeback Player of the Year honors. He became the fifth Raider in organization history to surpass 140 tackles this season.

Rapoport’s tweet was met with widespread criticism. Perhaps the most notable critique was Sam Monson, a former Pro Football Focus analyst who has gained a social media following of more than 129,000 people. Monson quote tweeted Rapoport, denying the idea that White has been good this season.

White has been a huge liability in coverage this season. PFF has credited him with allowing 65 receptions on 81 targets, meaning he’s allowed a passing conversion rate of 80.2 percent. White has allowed 477 passing yards, but just one touchdown.

That’s where the debate lies. Does tackle production matter when you’re consistently losing in coverage and allowing teams to convert first downs before making the tackle? Rapoport’s tweet about White caused quite the stir.
