MIDDLEBURY, VT — The 2025 season came to a close on Saturday afternoon for the William Smith College Herons lacrosse team.

The Herons were defeated by the York College of Pennsylvania Spartans 11-8 during the National Collegiate Athletic Association Third Round on the campus of Middlebury College in Vermont.

It was a hot start for William Smith as Herons senior attacker Katherine Murray recorded two first quarter goals to give her team a 3-2 lead after one quarter of play.

Murray alongside teammates Delaney Cassidy and Kayla Quirk each provided a team-high two goals in the season finale.

Cassidy’s goal in the second quarter with 11:19 left before the halftime break put her Herons’ up 5-4 at the time.

But, the Spartans recorded eight of the next ten goals to take a commanding 11-6 lead heading into the fourth quarter after leading 6-4 by the halftime intermission.

William Smith senior goaltender Maura Smeader took the loss and concluded with nine saves, 11 goals allowed.

The Herons finished their 2025 season with an overall record 14-5 and 9-0 in conference regular season action.
